PositionCarer 30-35 hours

Responsible to: The Home Manager


To assist residents in meeting their physical, emotional and psychological needs.


The Residents

  • To assist the residents in meeting their physical, social and psychological needs To assist each new resident in settling into the home and ensure that they receive appropriate assistance in making the transition from home to Home as easy as possible
  • To assist with new staff in settling in to their new jobs
  • To ensure that care plans are implemented for individual residents
  • To ensure that as far as possible, continence is promoted
  • To assist residents with personal care when ever necessary
  • To assist and encourage the residents in participating in activities that will provide both mental and physical stimulation
  • To perform duties in a cheerful, helpful way maintaining the highest possible standards of dignity for the residents
  • To work within the key worker system operated by the Home
  • To maintain resident confidentiality
  • To ensure that records relating to the residents are promptly and accurately completed

Health & Safety

To know and understand the health & safety requirements of the Home in relation to legislation and assist the Manager in meeting these through:

  • Ensuring the implementation of risk assessment recommendations in a timely and effective manner
  • Promptly reporting any part of the building, environment or equipment that requires maintenance and taking all action necessary to minimise risk.
  • Ensuring a full awareness of the requirements of the COSHH legislation
  • Ensuring a full awareness of fire and security policies

The Staff

  • To support the Home Manager in charge in ensuring that all designated duties of the shift are completed in a thorough, effective and pleasant way
  • To actively participate in the induction training of new staff
  • To attend and play an active role in regular staff meetings
  • To ‘buddy’ new Care Assistants

Supporting the Business

  • To support the Manager/Proprietors in the positive marketing of the home and its services.
  • To participate in service and Company policy groups and working parties if required


  • To work in a flexible and imaginative way.
  • To fully co-operate with the Manager in meeting their objectives
  • To ensure that the Manager is kept fully informed about the day-to-day running of the Home, health issues of the residents and any specific needs and difficulties.
  • To answer the front door and greet visitors in a friendly and welcoming way and assist them with refreshment if they wish
  • Ensure that administrative procedures are accurately documented and filed
  • To ensure that the Home is maintained in a clean and tidy condition
  • To be fully aware of the Operational and Staffing Policy Manuals
  • To carry out any other duties as may be deemed necessary and that are consistent with the basic objectives of the post including undertaking duties in other parts of the service as required

This job description gives an outline of the main objectives and duties of the post and will be revised periodically and amended as necessary to ensue that the service meets the needs of the residents.

The job holder will share with the Proprietors, the responsibility for suggesting alterations to the scope of duties in order to improve the effectiveness of the post.

Qualifications and Experience

– Hold or be working towards a NVQ Level II or equivalent in care of the elderly “E”

– Experience of working within a team “E”

– Experience of working within a person centered environment “D”


– The ability to use initiative and work flexibly. “E”

– A cheerful and positive disposition “E”

– Understand and maintain an awareness of the types of support an elderly person living in care may need. “E”

– Ability to establish a rapport with older people and good relationships with all other people. “E”

– Literacy and verbal communication skills at a level sufficient to enable clear messages to be communicated and precise and accurate reports to be written “E”

– Understanding of the requirements of good record keeping, care practice and other standards laid down in legislation for the running of a Registered Home “E”

– Understanding the rights of the individual, respecting these and ensuring that they are put into practice. “E”

– Understanding of Health & Safety and Equal Opportunities good practice and demonstrating a commitment to following these. “E”

– Experience of implementing the recommendations of risk assessments “D”

– Sufficient personal maturity to deal with a range of issues within a busy environment “E”

– Ability and willingness to work in a variety of settings “E”
